- Is under 3 months with 38.0 °C (100.4 °F) or more, measured rectally
- Refuses several feeds in a row, or is too sleepy to feed
- Has fewer than 6 wet diapers in 24 hours
- Cries in a way that sounds wrong to you: weak, high-pitched, nonstop
- Just seems "off" to you. Your gut counts as a symptom.
